Convicted former governor
of Delta State, Mr. James Ibori today at the Royal Court of Justice in
London lost his attempt to have his conviction reviewed by the British
judiciary as he was pointedly told to remain in jail and serve out his 13 years
term handed him last year.
Mr. Ibori’s appeal was dismissed for lack of merit. He was
jailed for money laundering and embezzlement of state funds amounting to
hundreds of millions of US dollars. His wife, sister and mistress had earlier
been jailed in London for similar charges.
Ibori was governor of Delta State between 1999 and 2007 on
the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during which period he
amassed stupendous wealth stolen from public purse and with which he bribed his
way into the corridors of power in Aso Rock to the extent of almost
single-handedly financing the presidential election of late president Umar Musa
Yar’Adua who died in office in 2010.
