TI Writes US 'National Anthem' About Ferguson Protests

TI has released a new track called New National Anthem, just days after making comments about racism and the Ferguson protests. The musician posted a snippet of the song, which features Skylar Grey, on his Instagram page. "I know dis may ruffle some feathers... But my people need to hear this..." he wrote in the caption. The record features lyrics including, "Free just to murder me, land of the handgun."

TI opens with a rap: "I know radio prolly ain't gonna play this… But chopper going off in the hood man like Afghanistan or the Gaza strip somewhere man. "Yeah, we hear it so much we probably numb to it by now. After all, it's the American way right? "Earlier this week, TI posted two messages on his Instagram page, talking about the violent protests that followed the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

The death of 18-year-old Michael Brown has sparked 10 nights of protests, which were often violent, between police and demonstrators. "Look at us... America has created a monster," wrote TI. "The result of ignoring & mishandling an already fragile spirited, recently enslaved, presently oppressed race/generation of people. Look at us. We're the monster that now refuses to be dismissed, overlooked,& ignored." In a later post, where he says Mr Brown's memory is "tarnished by our negative actions," he added: "What are we changing... Really? Look at us. Destroying our own community, but continuing to spend money in theirs. Refusing education... re-volving in the same cycle of ignorance instead of e-volving out of it."

US Attorney General Eric Holder has now met the parents of Mr Brown and has promised a "full, fair and independent" investigation. President Barack Obama and community leaders have appealed for calm and healing. Notable names including Nelly, John Legend and J Cole have also spoken out about the death of Mr Brown and the resulting protests. Other musicians, such as Jay Z and Kanye West, who have been outspoken on political issues in the past, have so far remained silent.
