Prince George sees butterflies for his birthday

There’s been a lot of media excitement Friday over a palace announcement that new photos — not just one, but three — marking Prince George’s first birthday will be released starting Saturday.

No idea what they look like (and if you break the media embargo, it’s off with your head!), but they sound pretty cute, as with all things George. They were taken earlier this month at the Natural History Museum in London when Prince William and Duchess Kate took their son to see the outdoor Sensational Butterflies exhibit.

Be still, our hearts.

Word of this photo session (the photographer was John Stillwell of the semi-official British Press Association agency) has been circulating among royal fans, but Friday was the first palace confirmation that the snaps (the two others will be released Monday) would mark the royal baby’s first birthday on July 22.

It’s a sweet idea for a photo venue: What kid doesn’t love a critters collection? Plus, Duchess Kate is a royal patron of the venerable London museum.

Besides all that, George was a huge hit when he visited the Taronga Zoo in Sydney during the Cambridge Down Under tour in April, and got to get up close and grab-able with a furry little bilby, also named George.

Hopefully, he didn’t grab any fragile butterflies.
